What does before-tax profit margin actually measure?

Why can revenue rise while before-tax margin falls?
Revenue can rise in nominal dollars while margin falls when input costs, labor costs, fixed overhead, or interest expense grow faster than realized revenue per unit. Inflation therefore creates a spread problem, not merely a price-level problem.

Margin percentages are not directly “inflation-adjusted”
A 13% margin remains 13% whether prices are stable or rising, but the real value of the resulting profit dollars changes. To keep up with inflation, protect the margin ratio and separately increase nominal before-tax profit by at least the relevant measure of inflation for the purchasing power you want to preserve.
Which inflation measure should your business track?
Track a weighted company cost index first, then use official indexes as external checks. CPI is useful for consumer purchasing power, but it rarely matches a business’s supplier, labor, rent, logistics, insurance, and financing mix.
The BLS explains that CPI measures inflation experienced by consumers, PPI measures price change at earlier production stages from the seller’s perspective, the Employment Cost Index measures labor-cost change, and import/export indexes cover traded goods and services. Weight the changes. Multiply each category’s cost share by its expected change, then add the contributions to estimate company cost inflation.
Compare against realized revenue per unit. Use actual net price after discounts and mix effects, not the announced list-price increase.
If materials are 40% of controllable cost and rise 6%, labor is 35% and rises 3%, and other costs are 25% and rise 2%, the weighted increase is 3.95%: (40% × 6%) + (35% × 3%) + (25% × 2%). This is a planning calculation, not an observed market benchmark.
