Expand only when the trailing three-month average covers direct costs, a reasonable owner wage, fixed overhead, tax reserves, replacement tools, and debt service—and still produces positive cash flow.
To be fair, the business may remain intentionally small. A disciplined part-time operation with $45,000-$80,000 of annual revenue and strong contribution per hour can be healthier than a $150,000 operation built on exhausting production and weak margins. Scale is useful only when it improves owner earnings and preserves quality.
Practical one-liner: the winning economics come from trusted provenance, skilled production, and price discipline—not from selling the most rocks.
