What Payback Period Is Realistic for Candle Production?
Payback measures how long the business takes to recover the initial cash invested. It should use cash available after normal operating costs, owner replacement salary, debt service, maintenance equipment spending, taxes, and working-capital needs. Using EBITDA alone usually makes payback look faster than the bank account will show.

It takes about 3.4 years: $10,000 in year one, $45,000 in year two, $45,000 in year three, and the remaining $20,000 during year four.

A fast payback is not automatically the best strategy. Underinvesting in testing, ventilation, quality control, inventory systems, or insurance can create hidden liabilities. The better investment case balances safe production, reliable fulfillment, enough working capital, and a return that remains acceptable when sales are 15%-20% below plan.
