Payback stretches when the plant needs extra inventory, customers delay approvals, equipment underperforms, margins lag commodity increases, or maintenance capex is excluded from the forecast. It also stretches when the owner treats all EBITDA as distributable cash. A credible base case includes ramp losses, at least one meaningful repair event, replacement reserves, realistic receivable days, and taxes.
The final investment test
- Confirm that contracted or highly probable demand covers at least 60%-70% of base-case break-even volume.
- Confirm that a 30% rise in landed bean cost does not create a liquidity crisis before pricing adjusts.
- Confirm that the plant can survive six months below expected OEE without missing debt payments.
- Confirm that owner distributions begin only after the working-capital reserve and maintenance plan are funded.
- Confirm that the downside case still produces a clear decision: delay, resize, toll-process, add equity, or secure stronger customer commitments.
The decision that matters
A cocoa processing plant is attractive when demand, yield, price protection, and working capital fit the same model. Capex alone does not create the return.
