The practical rule is to target a revenue level at least 20%-30% above operating break-even. That buffer absorbs holidays, sales gaps, write-offs, defects, delayed starts, and the normal volatility of project work.

Paper payback stretches when projects start late, a large customer pays slowly, the owner must keep selling, engineers sit on the bench, fixed-price work overruns, or cash is reinvested in new hires. It can also stretch when tax planning is ignored. The IRS notes that self-employed individuals generally file annual returns and pay estimated taxes quarterly.
