Labor productivity matters more than the wage rate alone
A welder paid $30 per hour may cost the company $42-$50 per paid hour after burden. If only 72% of paid hours are productive, the effective cost per productive hour can rise above $58. The financial model should therefore use productive direct hours per hull, not payroll hours alone.

Dealer wholesale can still be attractive because it lowers customer acquisition cost and broadens geographic reach. But the manufacturer must model the dealer discount explicitly. For a direct custom model, a deposit schedule such as 20% at order, 30% when fabrication starts, and the balance before delivery can materially reduce the cash gap. These ranges are planning rules, not published industry averages for every flat-bottom builder. The real benchmark should become the company's own clean, model-level history. After 20 to 30 repeated builds, the routing standard, material yield, rework rate, and warranty reserve should be updated from actual data.
Compliance, Warranty, and Market Risks Can Erase Profit Fast
Boat manufacturing carries product responsibility that a general fabrication shop may not be prepared for. The U.S. Coast Guard manufacturer portal explains Manufacturer Identification Codes, Hull Identification Numbers, safety-defect reporting, and recalls.
