A 20-acre job two hours away can be less profitable than an 80-acre job at a lower per-acre rate. Add a minimum charge, travel zone, equipment-move fee, and weather rescheduling clause so small or distant jobs do not consume the margin.
Timber Prices, Capacity, and Contribution Margin Drive Scale
Forestry scale is not simply more acres. It is more productive acres, tons, or billable field days per constrained resource. Here is the quick math behind the mixed-services case. At $100,000 of revenue, 52% variable cost consumes $52,000 and leaves $48,000 to cover fixed costs. That is why a company can be above accounting break-even and still have little owner cash.

A monthly average can hide three unproductive rain weeks followed by one strong week. Track required revenue per workable day and update it whenever the weather forecast, crew size, or equipment availability changes.

What Can the Owner Realistically Earn?
Owner earnings are not revenue, gross profit, or EBITDA. The owner may receive a market salary for doing forester, estimator, or operations-manager work, plus distributions from residual cash. Before a safe draw, the company must fund direct job costs, payroll, insurance, repairs, taxes, debt service, maintenance capital expenditure, and enough working capital to survive downtime.
Tax treatment also depends on whether the owner operates a service business, holds timber as an investment, or materially participates in a timber business. A paper payback can look shorter than reality because year one rarely produces a full mature-year cash flow.
