A model that hides repairs inside “miscellaneous” will overstate cash flow. Feed mills are mechanical businesses. This is also where capacity assumptions must be honest. A 5-ton-per-hour mixer running one 8-hour shift for 22 days has a theoretical 880-ton monthly capacity. Real throughput is lower after cleanout, maintenance, bagging delays, ingredient receiving, downtime, and small batches. The key industry-specific KPI is the ingredient replacement spread. A customer may order based on a quote built with corn at one price and soybean meal at another, but the mill has to replace inventory at the current market. Payback can stretch because the first year is rarely stabilized. The mill may run below capacity while customers test product quality, staff learn equipment, routes are adjusted, labels are registered, and supplier terms improve. Seasonality also matters: farms may buy differently during grazing season, hay shortages, show season, drought periods, or milk and livestock price swings.
