Founders often use a financial model, business plan, pitch deck, and assumption tracker to connect funding sources to equipment, working capital, capacity, revenue ramp, and debt service. The document matters less than the logic: every dollar raised should have a use, a timing assumption, and a payback path.
How Does the Financial Model Connect Pricing, Capacity, Cash Flow, and Payback?
A useful packaging manufacturing model should behave like the plant. When selling price changes, gross profit changes. When order size shrinks, setup time rises as a share of production. When utilization rises, labor and overtime may rise before fixed costs are fully leveraged. When a large customer pays slowly, cash falls even if the income statement looks healthy.

If initial investment is $1.6M and the business generates $320,000 of annual cash flow after debt service, maintenance reserves, and working capital growth, payback is 5.0 years. If the same plant generates only $190,000, payback stretches to 8.4 years.
Payback can look attractive on paper because machinery creates capacity immediately, but customers do not always fill that capacity immediately. Ramp-up time, sample approvals, customer audits, artwork revisions, raw material minimums, and collection timing can push real payback beyond the simple EBITDA multiple.
$1 of price leakage
A small pricing leak on high-volume packaging can erase a large share of owner cash because materials, labor, rent, and debt still have to be paid. The model should test price increases, waste, and utilization together.
