Margin Pressure, Risk, and the Decision to Expand
Existing recycling facilities are evaluated differently from new ones. A buyer or lender will not only ask whether the business is profitable today. They will ask whether the tonnage is contracted, whether commodity revenue is normalized, whether equipment maintenance has been deferred, whether residue rates are rising, whether permits are transferable, and whether customer concentration creates risk. A facility with a strong EBITDA year during favorable commodity markets may be worth less than it appears if it has weak processing fees or aging equipment.
Commodity price decline
Financial impact: lower revenue per marketed ton and weaker gross margin. Watch net revenue per inbound ton and use processing-fee floors, revenue-sharing collars, and buyer diversification.
Rising contamination
Financial impact: higher labor, residue disposal, rejected loads, and lower saleable yield. Watch residue rate and labor hours per ton, then adjust contamination fees and account rules.
Equipment downtime
Financial impact: lost throughput, overtime, missed shipments, and emergency repair cost. Watch line uptime and maintenance spend per ton, and fund spare parts before failures.
Customer concentration
Financial impact: losing one municipal or commercial contract can push the plant below break-even. Track top customer share of tons and revenue before expanding capacity.
Compliance or fire event
Financial impact: shutdowns, deductibles, remediation, higher insurance, and reputational damage. Track incidents, inspections, near misses, and insurance feedback every month.
Receivable slowdown
Financial impact: cash shortages even when revenue is booked. Track days sales outstanding and require credit limits for accounts that use the facility like a free lender.
Expansion decision rule
Expand when the current facility has stable contracted tons, strong line uptime, controlled residue, current receivables, and buyer demand for more clean material. Do not expand only because inbound inquiries are increasing; dirty tons without margin can make a larger facility less profitable.
The strongest investment case is not that recycling is good or that the market is large. It is that this specific facility can control its feedstock quality, process tons below the revenue it earns per ton, maintain equipment uptime, collect cash on time, and keep enough reserves to survive the next commodity downturn.
