Payback period

Use cash after debt service, taxes, maintenance capex, and a market-rate allowance for owner labor. Otherwise the model overstates the return.
Simple payback ignores the timing of the ramp. A base-case calculation of 2.6 years may become 3.2-3.8 calendar years when the first six to twelve months produce little payback cash. Seasonality, equipment replacement, working-capital growth, claims, and owner withdrawals can stretch it further. That is why the model should calculate monthly cash flow, cumulative cash recovery, and a downside case in which price is 10% lower, volume is 20% lower, or direct labor is 15% higher.
The investment makes sense when the company can protect rugs, earn a strong contribution on each order, keep the plant and routes productively loaded, and still preserve cash after paying the owner fairly. The most attractive rug cleaning operation is not necessarily the one with the largest washer. It is the one where technical capability, pricing discipline, route economics, quality control, and capital intensity fit the same financial plan.
