Risk reserve rule
Add a monthly reserve for warranty labor, device replacements, customer refunds, insurance deductibles, and slow collections. A model without a reserve usually overstates owner earnings.
How Should the Financial Model Connect the Whole Business?
A useful financial model does not stop at startup costs. It connects the full operating loop: lead source, close rate, installation capacity, average package price, hardware cost, technician hours, monitoring attach rate, RMR per account, attrition, service calls, fixed overhead, working capital, debt service, taxes, owner draw, and payback. When one assumption moves, the rest of the model should move with it.
For example, increasing the camera attach rate may raise average ticket from $1,400 to $2,200, but it may also increase hardware cost, install time, cloud support cost, and callback risk. Adding a second crew may increase capacity, but only if booked jobs, inventory, dispatch, and quality control are ready. Raising monitoring price may lift RMR, but only if it does not hurt close rate or cancellation risk. This is why the model should use connected drivers instead of flat revenue growth percentages.

A clean model also keeps working capital visible. Inventory is paid before the install. Payroll is paid before some customers pay. Monitoring revenue arrives monthly. Taxes and debt service take cash even when the owner wants to reinvest.

- Tie owner earnings to EBITDA after debt, taxes, replacement capex, reserves, and working capital.
The final decision is whether the plan works under pressure. Run three cases: conservative with higher CAC and slower RMR growth, base case with normal utilization, and upside with stronger referrals and lower callbacks. If the business only works when every assumption is perfect, it is not lender-ready, investor-ready, or owner-ready. If it still covers fixed costs, protects cash, and grows RMR under a conservative case, the economics are much more durable.
