The operating model should separate production payroll from selling and administrative payroll. A production employee may be direct labor when time is charged to a job and overhead when waiting, cleaning, calibrating, training, or handling rework. The operating break-even should also be translated into production units. If the average completed project is $4,500, the base case needs about 30 jobs per month. If a rollout averages $45,000, three rollouts may cover the month—but concentration risk rises sharply. Capacity check
Revenue is only credible when it fits the schedule. Convert monthly sales into print hours, finishing hours, design hours, installation crew-days, and shipping deadlines. A financial model that grows revenue without adding bottleneck labor or shifts is overstating profit.
How Much Can the Owner Realistically Take Home?
Owner income is not revenue, gross profit, or EBITDA. The business must first pay media, production labor, subcontractors, rent, software, insurance, sales costs, debt service, taxes, maintenance capital, and a working-capital reserve. The owner must also account for the job they perform. A founder acting as sales director and general manager should not call all remaining cash “profit” without recognizing a market-rate wage for that work.
