Evaluate a site by daily population, dwell time, hours of access, nearby alternatives, expected product mix, security, power, mobile signal, loading access, and the host's commission request.

Revenue is a simple multiplication problem with difficult inputs: active machines multiplied by transactions per machine per day, multiplied by average ticket, multiplied by active days. Every location proposal should be translated into that equation before a machine is purchased or moved.

Price for contribution, not markup alone
A $1.30 item sold for $2.50 has a $1.20 product margin before host commission, card fees, connectivity, spoilage, labor, fuel, and repairs. If the host receives 10% of sales and payment costs consume another 5%, the unit contributes about $0.83 before route labor and fixed overhead. A price that looks like a 48% gross margin can therefore become a roughly 33% contribution margin.
Use price ladders. Keep familiar entry items, but add premium energy drinks, protein products, larger beverages, fresh meals, or higher-value essentials where the audience supports them.
Test elasticities. Increase selected prices by $0.10-$0.25 and watch unit velocity, not just revenue.

Where Is Break-Even, and Which Lever Matters Most?
Break-even should be calculated at route level and machine level. The route calculation answers whether the company can cover labor, vehicle, storage, software, insurance, and management. The machine calculation answers whether a specific location covers its commission, product cost, payment cost, service time, and equipment charge.
Assume monthly fixed and semi-fixed costs of $6,000. Product cost is 45% of sales, host commissions are 8%, cashless and telemetry are 5%, and shrink is 1.5%. Contribution margin is therefore 40.5%. The result is $6,000 ÷ 40.5% = about $14,815 monthly break-even sales. The SBA break-even guidance provides the same core logic.
At a $2.35 average ticket, the route needs about 6,304 transactions a month, or roughly 21 transactions per machine per day across ten active machines. A route averaging only 15 transactions per machine per day is structurally below break-even unless pricing, product margin, host terms, or fixed costs improve.

Machine-level removal rule
Set a minimum monthly contribution for each location. For example, if a machine sells $900 a month, carries a 40% contribution margin after product, host, payment, and shrink costs, and consumes $180 of monthly service labor and travel, it contributes only $180 before equipment financing and central overhead. A financed machine with a $250 monthly payment is destroying cash at that site.
