That treatment matches the basic tax distinction in IRS Publication 334: a sole proprietor cannot deduct their own salary or personal withdrawals as a business expense. Paid assistants are labor cost; owner take-home is the residual after the business pays its other obligations and reserves cash. If the business is taxed as an S corporation or has a hired manager, the compensation structure must be rebuilt rather than copied from this model.
