Public-company margins are useful guardrails, not direct startup benchmarks. Simply Good Foods reported a 36.9% gross margin for the first three quarters of fiscal 2025, with inflation and acquisition mix affecting the result, in its fiscal third-quarter release. A financial model, business plan, or lender package should preserve those links. Raising price changes conversion and net revenue. Increasing MOQ may lower unit cost but raise inventory days. Adding wholesale volume can improve factory economics while worsening receivables. Hiring ahead of demand increases fixed cost and moves break-even. The dashboard should explain those trade-offs before the bank balance does.
Compliance, Testing, and Claims Are Financial Risks
A protein powder brand can outsource manufacturing, but it cannot outsource responsibility for what is sold under its name. The SBA says 7(a) loans can support short- and long-term working capital, machinery, equipment, supplies, real estate, and other eligible business uses. Simple payback is usually too optimistic because it assumes stabilized cash begins immediately. A realistic model applies monthly ramp-up, includes negative or low-cash launch months, funds the next inventory run, and delays owner distributions until the company maintains an operating reserve. The owner should also separate compensation for work from return on invested capital. A founder managing product, operations, and marketing may earn a salary comparable to a hired operator.
